"I have always found out about the history of the houses I've owned ..."

That response is typical of others when they find out my professional interest in writing house histories.

From that brief exchange I have now completed a history of the house the lady owned, and I now outline the steps taken in investigating it for your entertainment.

The first step is to find out the previous owners names and see if they held important positions in the community.

Our first stop is the Department of Lands, a lovely heritage building in Queen's Square, Sydney, directly beside Hyde Park Barracks and opposite St Mary's.

The Certificate of Title provides us with so much information - first that in the Volume and Folio of the property the Estate in Fee Simple was Lot 19 in deposited Plan in the Municipality of Waverley Parish of Alexandria and County of Cumberland being part of 13 acres granted to Henry Hough on the 16th March 1840.

On the back of the document is listed all the previous owners, and the first Volume and Folio numbers lead you to the original document, held by the Department of Lands and able to be viewed.

But the first thing we have found out is that Henry Hough owned the house. He was an early miller. So now follow his story.
